Fire outbreak: Victims petition NERC, demand compensation from AEDC

Victims of Fire outbreak allegedly caused by power surge from Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) two months ago in Maitumbi area of Minna, the Niger state capital, have petitioned the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) demanding for payment of damages.
The petition written on behalf of the victims by the Cosmic Chamber in Minna and endorsed by a principal partner in the Chamber, Mohammed El-Surur Abubakar, recalled that on February 20, 2016, the AEDC distributed power electricity with abnormally high voltage that led to the fire outbreak.
According to the petition, the power surge and fluctuations led to the electrocution of four persons, razed many houses and destroyed properties worth several millions of Naira.
The petitioners believe that the fire incident was a direct negligence from the electricity company.

The victims said they had written to AEDC demanding for payment of damages through the Minna Area Manager, adding that before then fire incident, the residents had complained about power surge in the area, but there was no response from the company.
In view of the development the petition requested the intervention of NERC to investigate the matter properly for the compensation of the victims as they lost lives and property due to the alleged negligence.
