Fika seeks restoration of parliamentary system for Nigeria

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Adamu Fika (Wazirin Fika) has advocated for the abolition of executive presidential system and restoration of parliamentary system of government to address imminent challenges facing the country.
The former SGF made the remark yesterday in Bauchi during a public lecture organised by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) alumni association, Bauchi state branch to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the Bauchi state Governor Mohammed Abubakar’s administration.
Represented by the former Registrar of Bayero University, Kano, Alhaji Sani Ibrahim Aminu, Fika who lamented that the country has been witnessing deterioration in the quality of governance for over three decades, emphasised that unless the principles and practice of good governance bequeathed by the founding fathers are re-adopted, “Nigeria would continue to wallow in backwardness.
“We should do away with this expensive and corrupt executive presidential system which lacks genuine checks and balances.
It has proven to be unsuitable for our country.
It was never the wish of Nigerians but was imposed on them by the military.
“We should revisit the system of parliamentary system based on the 1963 constitution with necessary amendments to bring it up-to date,” he suggested.
Presenting his lecture titled, “Unleashing Agricultural Potentials for Diversification of the Nigerian Economy,” the keynote speaker and Vice Chancellor, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, Professor Saminu Abdulrahman Ibrahim, who said the event’s topic was timely and commendable, asserted that the country must properly harness its agricultural potentials in order to diversify its economy and complement oil revenue.
In his speech, Governor Mohammed Abubakar expressed appreciation to the association for organising the lecture in his honour, saying the topic of discussion was in line with the state and federal government’s agenda, which were aimed at boosting agriculture for jobs and wealthcreation.
