The federal government Thursday said it has started the process of retaking over almajiri schools established by former President Gooodluck Jonathan in 19 northern states.
The schools were abandoned by successive administrations in the country.
This was disclosed by the executive secretary of the commission, Dr.Idris Sani, at an interactive session and signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the commission and the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All (CSACEFA) in Yola, Adamawa state capital.
“I have directed my chief of staff to conclude arrangements for the taking over of 157 almajiri schools in the country, build by former President Gooodluck Jonathan, which were abandoned by successive administrations and we have also applied to the federal government to help us rehabilitate them and take over for normal academic activities in our quest to tackle the challenges of almajiri and out of school children, ” he said.
He further stated that the commission is in partnership with the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Study and they have already discussed with the board who have quite a number of staff and they have agreed to give the commission their teachers to be deployed to the almajiri schools, including the one to be established across the country.
The executive secretary further stated that the issues surrounding almajiris and out of school children is a very serious one that needs collective efforts hence the need for all hands to be on deck to tackled it
