FG says generation of 40,000mw electricity achievable by 2020

Federal government has said its target to peak electricity generation at 40,000mw by year 2020 is feasible considering the contribution expected from Mambilla, Zungeru large hydros, off grid power from solar, wind and coal to power in the coming years.

The permanent secretary, Ministry of Power, Amb.  Godknows Igali, restated this position when he hosted a team of the body of Permanent Secretaries in the Civil Service on Peer Review Mission (PRM).

Igali said the review was meant to assist the creation of service wide framework to enable Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) deliver on their mandates.

He said this initiative would make the civil service more responsive and accountable to Nigerians.
He said the bottom line of his Ministry’s mandate was to provide policy framework for the realization of electricity for domestic and industrial uses of Nigerians.

“For a long time government has regulated the sector, the attending problems have been with us for long, now the determination of government is to charge gear and allow the private sector to come in to power,” he said.
Expressing optimism that Nigerians would soon experience uninterrupted power, he said although government had not privatized the transmission arm of the sector, it was encouraging private sector to come into that sub-sector.

The Head of Service of the Federation (HSF), Bukar Goni Aji, commended the manner the leadership of the sector had handled privatization adjudged to be the biggest on the continent.
He ascribed this feat to the openness, purposeful and transparent leadership.
