FG charges oil companies on biodiversity action plan

The Minister of Environment, Mrs. Laurentia Mallam, has tasked oil companies operating in Nigeria to look into adopting a new plan with the aim of protecting the nation’s biodiversity.

Mrs.Mallam who made the call in Port Harcourt, Rivers state at the inauguration of the Expert Working Group of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Global Environment Facility (GEF) Conservation of Biodiversity project in the Niger Delta, said that the Niger Delta biodiversity project calls for new ways of doing business in the region.

“Government, being one of the major players in the industry, aligns itself with stated goals and objectives.
“ If government, the oil and gas industry and local communities adopt and pilot new biodiversity action planning tools for proactive biodiversity mainstreaming in the Niger Delta, a major shift would have been achieved.’’
