FedPoly Ado Ekiti shut over students’ rampage

Authorities of Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, yesterday shut the institution indefi nitely following violent protest by students over alleged death of two of them at the school’s health centre Trouble started Friday night when two of the students reportedly complained of malaria fever and were rushed to the polytechnic health centre for treatment, but their conditions later got worse thereby leading to their death in the early hours of Saturday.
Our correspondent gathered that as the news of their death filtered to the students’ resident on campus, they mobilised themselves and marched to the health centre and set it ablaze.
Apart from also destroying some other property on sight, the students blocked all roads leading to the institution and disallowed movement of vehicles.
One of the students who spoke to newsmen under anonymity, described the attitude of the polytechnic authority to their welfare and wellbeing as appalling.
He alleged that anytime any of the sick student visit the health centre, the only drug available was paracetamol and nothing more, no matter the type of sickness.
Th ough the polytechnic authorities did not confi rm whether any student actually died, the registrar of the institution, Mrs. Sade Adediran in a statement, announced the immediate and indefi nite closure of the school.
Th e statement warned that any student found on campus after the closure would be apprehended
