FEC okays N6.1bn Kotonkarfe bridge

… Approves N538m aviation bird deterrent system

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) Wednesday approved N6.1 billion for the rehabilitation of Murtala Mohammed Bridge in Kotonkarfe, Kogi state.

This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Works and Housing, Mr Abubakar D. Aliyu while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly FEC meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We presented a memo to the Council, which the council graciously approved. The memo was on the rehabilitation of Murtala Mohammed Bridge, at Kotonkarfe, in Kogi State. The contract sum is N6.61 billion with a completion period of 24 months,” he said.

The minister said the rehabilitation work covers the entire bridge, which has a distance of 1.76 kilometres and the scope of work is to rehabilitate the dual carriage-way between the bridge embalmment.

“Others include, the repairs bridge protection work, repair of bridge furniture works, repairs of asphaltic concrete works, repairs of concrete steel works on foundation sub-structure of the bridge on the water cleaning and corrosion control,” he said.

Similarly, FEC  approved N538 million for the procurement of a bird deterrent system, to improve safety operations in some airports across the country.

Minister of Aviation, Mr Hadi Sirika, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly FEC meeting.

He said the benefitting airports are Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu.

“Today in Council, we had a memo form aviation, which was approved, for the procurement of a bird deterrent system, for our airports in Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu.

“What the system does is, it scares birds away from our runways and it also avoids the ingestion of birds into the engine of aircrafts, also known as bird strike and that improves safety operations and the efficiency of our airports.

“The total amount for this procurement is N538, 112, 912.58, an equivalent of $1, 758, 538.92, including all taxes and the delivery period is three months,” he said.

The minister said similar procurements had been done for Lagos and Abuja airports.
