Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has said that out of the 22 generating sets expected for powering Abuja street lights, fi ve have been delivered and installed same to ensure a brighter city at all times. Th e Coordinator, Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC), Hajiya Safi ya Umar, made this known during a meeting with the street light contractors in her offi ce recently.

She said some of the street lights currently being powered by the newly installed gen sets were those at the Herbert Macaulay Way, NEPA Junction, Wuse, Zone 6, and others. She charged the contractors to always work hand-in-hand in order to achieve the goal of brighter streets at nights. “If there is no synergy among all the contractors we will be in perpetual darkness. Do not try to outshine one another, but work together for the interest of FCT.

“Always put the generating sets off when there is power from the Abuja Electricity DistributionCompany (AEDC) so that the Administration does not pay double,” she said. Umar further called for 24hours surveillance of the transformers, adding that “though they belong to the AEDC, any event of darkness will set the Babanbola to work in vandalism; unless you want us to be sacked, work hand-in-hand.” She affi rmed that the Ministerof the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, wanted the streets in the City to be as bright as they were 20 years ago when the nights were like days in the city. Speaking earlier, one of the contractors, Engr. Egbo Jerome, said maintenance of street lights was a tedious work.
