Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has expended about N20 million on rural women empowerment in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The women numbering 600 were trained on five line skills, including cosmetics, shampoo, omo, izal, hair fresher, bleach and juice making etc and given N30, 000 grants each.
Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, who was represented by her Special Adviser on Social Development, Mrs. Uche Nwafor, at the graduation ceremony of the women at the Social Development Secretariat yesterday, said women development centers in the six area councils have been rehabilitated.
She said, the task of building Abuja is not government’s business alone; just as she urge them to support the federal capital territory administration.
The minister therefore tasked the women on making maximum use of the opportunity for the upliftment and wellbeing of their families and FCT at large.
Minister of FCT’s Wife, Hajiya Aisha Mohammed, in her remarks, said building of a world-class capital city was an encompassing and inclusive of all residents of the territory.
She said with this initiative war had been declared on poverty in the FCT.
She also enjoined all the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the skills acquired, just as she encouraged them to pass same to other people around.
The Secretary Social Development Secretariat, Mrs. Blessing Onuh, said the women were trained for a period of six weeks and given grants of N30, 000 each.
She said the administration had so far trained over 5, 000 women in the scheme, but hoped to train 1, 000 and not 600 women next year.
