FCTA begins slum upgrade in Orozo, Kwali, others

As part of the Abuja Integrated Infrastructure Project, The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has over the weekend, embarked on the upgrade of some selected slums in the territory.

The exercise which will be carried out in the Orozo area of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), and Kwali, will involve detailed engineering design and preparation for the integrated project.

According to the Department of Monitoring and Inspection of the FCT, contracts have already been awarded to two companies for the upgrade.

Speaking during the inspection exercise, the Director Monitoring and Inspection, (TPL) Olawale Labiyi, said  the upgrade of slums in Abuja is a welcome development by the administration.

Labiyi said this was a laudable project that will impact positively on the lives of the masses, and he urged the contractors to expedite action on the designs.

Leader of the inspection team, Ijirotimi Olanrewaju, said the scope of the work includes carrying out of reconnaissance survey of the project area, planning design, preliminary and final engineering designs that will include roads, water, sewage and electricity.

He said the contracts were awarded under Satellite Towns Development Department and the aim is to upgrade the slums so that they can benefit from the same quality of infrastructure that is obtainable in the city centre.

His said: “We are all aware that communities like Orozo, Kwali and others in Abuja have unplanned developments and the plan of government is to provide infrastructure that is commensurate to that in the city centre.”

He said the first step in achieving this is the design stage that will appraise the current situation on ground and that is what the contractors are working on.
