FCT Police smash 6 ‘one chance’ robbery gangs, impounds 296 vehicles

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has smashed six ‘one chance’ robbery gangs that have been terrorising residents of the territory and it’s environs.

This is as operatives of the command rescued three victims, including a pregnant woman, abducted by members of the smashed ‘one chance’ gangs.

CP Disu disclosed this during a press briefing, Tuesday at the Command’s headquarters in Garki, Abuja.

He noted that since the launch of the Command’s Special Tactical Team (STT) the command has impounded 296 vehicles for violations such as the use of tinted glasses, driving with only one plate number, and the use of concealed or defaced number plates.

He said, “The Command recently declared war against one chance robbers and other criminal gangs in the FCT. Following this announcement, and in line with my directive, on November 23, 2024, at approximately 1:00 PM, operatives from the State Intelligence Department (SID) apprehended one Ibrahim Kabiru during routine patrol along Ahmadu Bello Way.

“Suspicious circumstances surrounding his parked vehicle prompted a search, revealing one Point-of-Sale (POS) machine, one knife, scissors, two mobile phones, and female luggage suspected to be stolen.

“Upon interrogation, Kabiru failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the items, raising concerns about his involvement in ‘one chance’ robbery. He is in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.”

Similarly, “On November 28, 2024, at approximately 7:00 PM, a distress call reported an ongoing robbery along Idu Industrial Area Road. Police operatives from Karimo Division swiftly responded, arresting one Ikechukwu  Ngerem at the scene and rescuing the victim, Doris Gabriel, a heavily pregnant woman.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that Doris had been abducted on her way home from Federal Medical Center Jabi by a gang posing as commercial vehicle operators. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects,” the Police boss stated.

He further disclosed that earlier on November 6, 2024, the Command apprehended three members of a gang known for impersonating law enforcement officers to abduct unsuspecting victims.

“Further investigations led to the arrest of additional suspects: Hyelda Aliyu, 29; Mathias Nwosu 40; and Blessing Ukachukwu 49. Recovered items included a silver Toyota Corolla (Reg. No. KUJ 27 TY) and a blue Mazda 323 (Reg. No. RBC 711 XL). The suspects have confessed to their crimes and are awaiting trial,” he added.

The Police boss also disclosed that operatives of the command arrested two suspects: Udoka Obiyo and Moses Anogwa, for criminal conspiracy and robbery; just as two members of a syndicate that uses knives and machetes to rob victims at traffic points and bus stops: Isa Muhammad (alias Mallam Hassan), 18, and Musa Abdullahi, 18, were arrested near Wuse Zone 4 bridge.

These achievements, CP Disu said underscore our unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property in the FCT.

“Let us continue working together to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all residents,” he implored.

While emphasising the importance of public cooperation in the fight against crime, CP Disu urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities by utilising the Command’s established communication channels to provide valuable information.
