FCT Primary Health Care Development Board has appealed to the federal government to enact legislation compelling house owners to construct toilets.
Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, made the appeal at the inauguration of the National Immunisation Plus Days at the weekend, in Damagaza Community in the FCT.
Mohammed said that many people had resorted to open defecation, due to inadequate toilet facilities, adding that it could lead to an outbreak of disease.
“We appeal to individuals constructing their houses to build toilets.
“We also appeal to the government to impose a law that no house should be constructed whether it is a local or modern house without a toilet.
“Corporate organisations, parks where people gather and markets must have adequate toilet facilities.
“We found out that some places in the FCT where people gather to have fun, especially children have no adequate toilets.’’
Mohammed urged parents to present their children for immunisation in order to eradicate polio from Nigeria.
He said the immunisation, which commenced on March 1, would end on March 4, noting, however, that another round of the immunisation would take place in April.
Mohammed said that since March 2013, the FCT had not recorded any polio outbreak, assuring that the FCT Administration would intensify the immunisation programme.
Also speaking, the Chief of Garki Village, Sapeyi, Alhaji Usman Nda-Kupi, pledged to support the government in its effort to eradicate polio in the country.
Nda-Kupi urged parents to ensure that their children were immunised. (NAN)
