Fashola lauds children for commitment to combat climate change

The Lagos State Governor, BabatundeFashola has lauded children in the state for their commitment towards tackling climate change in the country.
Fashola who gave the commendation in an address presented at the 6th anniversary of climate change clubs in Lagos state schools held at the Nigerian Police College grounds, Ikeja, hinted, that the seed of sustainable change planted in 2008 has yielded bountiful harvests.

“As the state government celebrates the 6th anniversary of the climate change club, an event which was put in place, to nurture the seed of change planted towards behavioural change and inculcation of ideal environmental lifestyle in our homes, schools and entire Lagos residents, am happy to state, that it has continued to increase awareness on the issue of climate change,’’ he said.

He added that the result of the various exchange programmes and performance at international competitions has reaffirmed his belief in the ability of the children to make a change. He was quick to add, that this has encouraged the state government to do more in its collective desire to attain a sustainable environment and bequeath a future for incoming generation.

The governor acknowledged that Lagos state indeed is vulnerable to the effects of global warming, pointing out, that the establishment of the climate change clubs in schools in the state, was part of the government’s strategic and complimentary efforts to correct the mistakes of the past and make a sustainable choice and decision today.

In his welcome address, Commissioner for Environment, Tunji Bello said that it was gratifying to note, that six years ago, when this club was formed, little the government know, that “the little mustard seed sowed then could now transform to a big oak tree, that not only influences the lives of people but also become a principal vehicle of transformation which is positively influencing people’s behaviour and habits”.
He said that over the years, emerging facts on issues concerning climate change have shown that children and the aged were about the most vulnerable to climate change effects.
Bello pointed out, that this development necessitated the need for the establishment of the climate change club to create awareness, educate the youths as well as make them change agents.
‘’Climate change is a global challenge that transcends beyond borders which explains the reason why it has become the collective responsibilities among global payers including you, our children to come together and fight the monster,” he said.
