Farmlands’ll improve soil fertility, natural regeneration – Hassan

The Director-General of National Great Green Wall, Dr. Bukar Hassan said nursery establishment to raise various tree species seedlings for the establishment of different agro-forestry models like orchards, woodlots, shelter belts, windbreaks, trees especially leguminous trees on farmlands that will improve the soil fertility, farmers managed natural regeneration.

He made this known during a chat with Blueprint in Abuja.

Hassan added that the oasis rehabilitation and sand dunes fixation for increased agricultural land, 
climate smart agriculture for climate change adaptation to enhanced food production and improved livelihoods.

He stated that the insufficient and un-timely release of funds to carry out afforestation works which is time bound considering the pattern of rainfall in the desert prone areas of the country.

“The land tenure system as some State Governments have challenges in payment of compensation to acquire land needed for establishing the plantations, insecurity, banditry, insurgence and lack of awareness of people in appreciating afforestation and importance of tree planting,” he added.

He noted that impacts of global warming, rural-urban migration, insecurity, loss of bio-diversity, flood erosion, loss of soil nutrients, poverty, scarcity of food as a result of poor yield etc.
