Expert recommends social media strategy against insurgency

social-media-strategyA communication and social media expert, MrSodiqAlabi, has called on the Nigerian military forces to adopt a comprehensive social media strategy in its fight against insurgency across the country.

Mr. Alabi who made the call while commenting on the current affairs programme, Nigeria Watch in Abuja, said such strategy will easily acquaint and allow the public to assess information on security intelligence.
‘’Instead of complaining about disinformation coming through social media, there is a need for the Nigerian Army to be very active on social media. This will allow the public to easily verify information and claims concerning security through them. They should bring in experts who will help them to design a comprehensive and well-articulated social media communication strategy, a strategy that will prove effective in their fight against misinformation,” he said.

He further charged government agencies at all levels to make maximum use of various social media tools in their communication with the public.
Earlier on the programme, the Army spokesperson, Major General Chris Olukolade, had lamented the disturbing level of misinformation that is being disseminated through the various social media platforms.
‘’Social media has been used to transmit a lot of confusion in a number of instances, and the very unsuspecting members of the public believe it at least for a while, and sometimes believe it as the ultimate truth and are reluctant to change their position even when the real truth has been said,’’ the spokesman decried.
