Ex-governors speak on Goni’s demise

The Former Governors’ Forum has described late governor of Borno state, Alhaji Mohammed Goni, has a bridge builder who served as a veritable link between the golden generation of governors of the Second Republic and succeeding generation of governors. 

The late elder statesman died last Wednesday at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Borno state.

The group in a statement jointly signed by former Governor of old Anambra state and chairman 1979 set of former governors, Senator Jim Nwobodo, on behalf of Alhaji Balarabe Musa, His Royal Highness Alhaji Awwal Ibrahim, Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Executive Secretary, of the forum, Prof Tunde Esan, recalled that Goni’s tenure as the governor of Borno state was considered a huge success. 

The statement issued Sunday in Abuja reads in part: “It is with a sad heart but glory to the Almighty God that we receive the news of the death of a member of the Second Republic set of governors and an elder statesman, Alhaji Mohammed Goni. 

“Alhaji Mohammed Goni was elected as the first civilian governor of Borno state in 1979 on the platform of Great Nigeria People’s Party (GNPP). A consummate politician and grassroots mobiliser, his tenure as the governor of Borno state was considered a huge success. 

“For close to forty years, he navigated through the twists and turns of the Nigeria politics without blemish. Well loved in and outside of his beloved state, his life of simplicity was a source of inspiration to younger generation of politicians. 

“He eschewed politics without bitterness, which was the cardinal principle of his party of choice, Great Nigeria People’s Party. He was a bridge builder who served as a veritable link between the golden generation of governors of the Second Republic and succeeding generation of governors. He was also the running mate and vice presidential candidate to Sen Jim Nwobodo, under the banner of the UNPP. 

“Simple, self-effacing, and unassuming, he served the people of Borno state with integrity, passion and honesty. May his soul rest in peace”, the statement said.
