Ex-convict in court for theft

An ex-convict, Taofeek Omobowale, 23, has been brought before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, over alleged theft of N600,000.
The Prosecutor, Sergeant Iyabo Johnson, said the accused who is facing charges of stealing, committed the offence on March 14, 2014, at Shop 3,Wera Market, Ladega in Ikorodu.

She told the court that Omobowale had served a two-year jail term from 2011 to 2012 for the same offence.
Johnson alleged that the accused had entered a shop belonging to one Godspower Hyginus, while he was sleeping and the sales boy was busy selling some goods to a customer at the other side of the shop.

She said, “Immediately he entered the shop, he carried the cash box containing N600,000. However, the owner of the shop, who is also the complainant was awaken from his sleep and saw him absconded with the box.”
The prosecutor said, the suspect was subsequently apprehended by the people around but had sprayed some money into the air while he was running away.

She said the offences contravened Sections 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mr. B.A. Sonuga, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, adding that the sureties must be civil servants and must show evidence of tax payment for two years.
The case was adjourned till May 22, 2014, for further hearing.
