EU, UNICEF to renovate 162 health centres in Bauchi

European Union (EU) in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has unveiled its plan to renovate and upgrade 162 Primary Health Care centers in Bauchi state. This was disclosed yesterday by the head of UNICEF Bauchi field office , Abdullahi Kaikai, during EU/UNICEF mediaorientation meeting held in Bauchi. He said renovation of the health facilities, a four-year programme, was aimed at improving maternal, new born and child health in all the 323 wards of the state, adding that they had planned to support the state government to renovate and provide hospital equipment to the health centres to strengthen health system in the state.

“We want to ensure functional health facilities in all the wards, LGs and communities in Bauchi state. We are supporting the state government with resources and equipment to ensure that every ward in the state has a functional PHC,” he said. In her presentation on “strengthening primary health care and community resilience for improving maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition”, EU-MNCHN representative, Dr. Halima Abdu, said to save the life of babies, a four-year project would be carried out in three states of Bauchi, Adamawa and Kebbi at the cost of 54 million Euro. European Union contributions to the project is 50 million Euro while UNICEF contributed 1 million Euro and Bauchi, Adamawa and Kebbi state governments were to contribute 1 million Euro each.
