Erosion: Rotary Club, Centenary Forest plant 500 trees in Kaduna Rimi College

As part of efforts to combat environmental challenges such as erosion and flooding, the Rotary Club of Kaduna, in partnership with Centenary Forest United Kingdom, has commenced the second phase of its tree planting exercise at Rimi College, Kaduna.

The president of Rotary Club Kaduna, Mrs Portia  Stephanie Aji, who spoke during the flag-off ceremony, said the exercise aims to plant 500 trees, bringing the total number planted this year to 1,000.

According to her, the initiative was meant to complements the Kaduna State Government’s plan to plant over 10 million trees in four years.

“We are planting trees to conserve the environment, address climate change, and mitigate the effects of deforestation, which has led to erosion and flooding. Trees take over 20 years to grow, and we’ve lost so many without replacing them,” Aji said.

She explained that the first phase of the project was carried out at Kaduna State University in July, where 500 trees were planted.

Speaking on behalf of Centenary Forest United Kingdom, Andrew Kasa said their organisation was committed to supporting the Rotary Club’s efforts.

He stressed that the project would help forestall natural disasters such as wildfires and landslides while beautifying the state.

He added that the tree species being planted include “mango, jatropha, and oranges.”

Kasa urged more Nigerians to embrace tree planting as a means of combating climate change and safeguarding the country’s future.
