Equity market rebounds over new forex policy

Transactions at the nation’s equity market rebounded following introduction of  market determined foreign rate policy which was a boost to investor confidence.
Specifically, market capitalisation of listed equities increased by N691 billion or 7.39  per cent to N10.044 trillion from N9.353  trillion recorded in the preceding week.

Also the  Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index increased by 2,014.65 basis points in the last five days to 29247.27 points from 27232.62 traded the previous week.  On a year-to-date, the NSE ASI has gained 211basis points.  In the Market Capitalization same vein, all sectored gauges closed in the
green with the exception of the NSE ASeM Index, that declined by 0.17 per cent. NSE Premium index gained 187.82 to 1817.98, the NSE Main board index improved by 63.15 to 1,320.41, NSE 30 index rose by 86.97 to 1,297.65 points, NSE Banking index went up by 24.18 basis points to 300.47, NSE Insurance index appreciated by 3.92 to 136.27, NSE Consumer Goods Index 42.51 basis points to 734.80, NSE Oil and Gas index 1.55 to 334.01, NSE Lotus II grew by 35’53 to 1,856.67 while Pension Index surged by 59.31 to 881.87 points.   Investors during the week traded a  turnover of  2.158 billion  shares worth  N20.394 billion in  24,369 deals  in contrast to a total of 959.917 million shares valued at N7.871 billion that exchanged hands last week in 17,561 deals.

The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart with 1.939 billion shares valued at N12.393 billion traded in 16,023 deals; thus contributing 89.85 per cent and 60.77 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively. The Consumer Goods Industry followed with 77.415 million shares worth N4.747 billion in 3,489 deals. The third place went to the Conglomerates Industry with a turnover of 74.437 million shares worth N412.717 million in 1,018 deals.
Trading in the top three equities namely – United Bank For Africa Plc, FBN Holdings Plc and Zenith
International Bank Plc accounted for 1.001 billion shares worth N6.778 billion in 7,153 deals, contributing 46.37 per cent and 33.23 per cent  to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.
