Equestrian: Rupert in top season 10 finish, eyes 2028 Olympics appearance

A young Nigerian equestrian, Rupert Hyde, is already making waves in the international equestrian scene, and the Nigeria Equestrian Federation is beaming with pride.

Born in London in 2007 to British/Nigerian James and British Mum Katie, Rupert’s journey to equestrian stardom began at a tender age.

Rupert’s family moved to Spain when he was young, and their home became a haven for four Andalusian horses.

“I don’t remember a day without horses ever since!” Rupert exclaimed.

As the family relocated to the UK, Rupert’s passion for equestrian sports only grew stronger. He won a riding and rugby scholarship to the prestigious Millfield school in Somerset, which boasted an impressive equestrian department. Rupert seized the opportunity, taking the four Andalusian horses with him to school.

Under the guidance of experienced coaches, Rupert honed his skills, competing for the school in various competitions and national events. His remarkable talent earned him a spot as the youngest BS showjumping rider to participate in the Dodson & Horrell National Champs at Aintree Liverpool.

Rupert’s progression in the equestrian world was swift and impressive. He transitioned into British Eventing, navigating the ranks to reach Novice and 2* levels. His ultimate goal is to represent Nigeria in the Olympics.

Currently, Rupert is participating in the British Eventing Season, which runs from March to October. Within this season, he is competing for the U18 Novice championships for the South West region of England.

Rupert began at BE 80, tackling jumps no higher than 80cm, before advancing to 90, 100 (FEI equivalent 1*), and now professional levels, including Novice (equivalent to FEI 2*), intermediate (3*), and advanced (4*).

“I’m excited to ride my first 2* and have qualified in a few weeks,” Rupert said.

He plans to participate in several events, aiming to conclude the season in October at the 3* level. Next season, he hopes to reach the 4* level, paving the way for Olympic qualification.

The Nigeria Equestrian Federation is thrilled with Rupert’s progress, stating, “Today marks a historic milestone for Nigeria as we embark on an exciting journey to become a global equestrian powerhouse!”

“Rupert Hyde, our equestrian sensation, is proudly putting Nigeria on the world map, kicking off his season with an impressive top 10 finish,” the federation added.

The federation enjoined Nigerians to rally behind Rupert, saying, “Join us in following Rupert’s remarkable journey as he accumulates points and strives to qualify for the prestigious World Equestrian Games and the Olympics. Let’s show our support. Go Rupert!”

As Rupert continues to make waves in the equestrian world, his family remains a constant source of support. His parents, James and Katie, are thrilled to see their son excel in his passion.

Rupert’s journey serves as an inspiration to young Nigerian equestrians, demonstrating that with dedication and hard work, they too can achieve greatness in the sport.

The Nigeria Equestrian Federation is committed to supporting Rupert and other young equestrians, providing them with the necessary resources and guidance to excel in the sport.

As Rupert prepares for the next phase of his equestrian journey, he remains focused on his goals, driven by his passion for the sport and his desire to make Nigeria proud.

The nation waits with bated breath as Rupert takes on the challenge of qualifying for the Olympics, proudly flying the Nigerian flag in the equestrian world.

Rupert’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and passion. As he continues to soar to new heights, he inspires a nation to believe in the possibilities of greatness.

The Nigeria Equestrian Federation, Rupert’s family, and the entire nation stand behind him, cheering him on as he embarks on this extraordinary journey.

With each stride, Rupert brings Nigeria closer to the forefront of the equestrian world, making his nation proud with every achievement.
