Enugu LG elections: APC factions disagree on participation

The factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu state, Deacon Okey Ogbodo has distanced the party from reports that it had fielded candidates for the upcoming local government elections in the state.

Deacon Ogbodo who has sustained a long standing legal battle over the leadership of the party in the state, said the party was still observing the electoral process and was yet to decide whether to participate in the scheduled elections or not.

He said, “My attention has been drawn to reports of certain questionable characters parading as former or present officers of the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State and fraudulently seeking credibility to the current seemingly flawed process of emergence emergence of candidates for the February, 29, 2020, local government elections in the state.

“The APC Enugu State Working Committee under my leadership is still watching and observing closely, the evolution of events to make the best possible decision on whether or not to involve our party in the scheduled elections. Public utterances by A.C Udeh who arrogated untenable party positions to himself should be disregarded by the public.

“Therefore, the so-called reports of APC already fielding candidates should be discountenanced as they are untrue, coming from characters that are at best mercenaries that has no authority or mandate to speak or act for APC.

“It would appear that the ruling party in Enugu State is desperate to undermine the APC in the state, being the only strong and credible opposition, with a view to gurrantee a predictable outcome for only its candidates in the local government elections.

“The APC Enugu Executive which I lead is watching these pre-election events closely with keen interest, but suffice it to say that the early signs are neither good nor encouraging.

Ogbodo further encouraged the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commisssion (ENSIEC) to be truely independent in discharging it’s statutory mandates.
