Enugu earmarks N178m for empowerment of indigent, vulnerable people

The Enugu state government has disclosed that it would spendN178, 000,000.00 to empower indigent and vulnerable people in the state in 2024.

The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Roberts Ozongwu, made the disclosure Friday during a breakdown of the 2024 budget proposal which was presented by Governor Peter Mbah to the state on Tuesday.

“While the state will expend N178 million to cater for the physically challenged and the vulnerable, the state will spend N700 million to procure Solar Energy as alternative power source for the Enugu Ssate House of Assembly,” Ozongwu said.

According to the commissioner, N7.2 billion was mapped out to purchase official and security vehicles for office of the governor.

“In the same breadth, N200 million will be used to acquire equipment for security personnel at the office of the governor, while N40 million will be used to acquire 20 drones for aerial surveillance for office the governor as well.”

He said within the budget, the government would construct over 1,250-Kikometre roads across the state.

Ozongwu said the state would get funds to finance the projects through prudent management of funds and plugging of revenue leakages as well as the funds accruing from the federation accounts.

“In view of the anticipated rise in federation accounts transfers as a result of rise in oil price at International market, priority will however also be given to prudent management of public funds, plugging of revenue leakages in IGR through compulsory use of the pay direct system in all government transactions as well as the creation of an inventor-friendly environment.”
