Emefiele: Arewa CSOs threaten to stage protest at DSS headquarters

The Arewa Civil Society Organisations have threatened to mobilise members under it to match to occupy premises of the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters Abuja over the continued incarceration of suspended CBN governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele, who was arraigned at a Federal High Court in Lagos by the DSS, was on Tuesday granted bail by the court, but the DSS operatives just outside the court wrestled him from the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in a dramatic scene and took him back to their custody thereby disallowing him from fulfilling the bail conditions to secure freedom.

But the Arewa CSOs in a statement signed by its chairman, Adamu Aminu Musa, said they are going to seek the collaboration of Amnesty International and National Human Rights Commission to ensure am effective protest that would force the DSS to release Emefiele and end other acts of violation of Nigerians human rights.

“The Arewa Civil Society Organisations have been compelled to mobilise members under its umbrella in numbers and match to occupy premises of the Yellow House for a peaceful protest in reaction to the DSS continuous attack on the judiciary by defying several court orders, illegally holding Nigerian citizens in detention, thus, violating their fundamental human rights. The secret service on the 10th of June, 2023 arrested Mr Emefiele in Lagos, held him in detention for over a month without charging him to court or releasing him.

“And now even after arraigning him before a judge, he still remains in detention. Also in connection to Emefiele’s case, Alhaji Aminu Yaro and his wife, Sa’adatu Yaro were arrested since 12th of July, 2023 and have been in detention too, all against their fundamental human rights. Two judges, Hon. Justice Nicholas Oweibo and Hon. Justice Edward Okpe have presided over the above cases in Lagos and Abuja on 25th of July, 2023 and have both granted bail to Mr Emefiele and ordered the immediate release of Alhaji Aminu Yaro and his wife.”
