Electrocution: AEDC takes awareness campaign to primary schools

Determined to curb incidences of electrocution and other electrical hazards, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has taken its awareness campaigns to schools aimed at conscientising pupils on the dangers of misapplying electricity. Th e fi rm’s Managing Director, Engr. Ernest Mupwaya, who led the campaign to LEA Primary School, Wuse 11, Zone 3, Abuja, told the pupils the importance of electricity as well as the harmful eff ect of abusing electrical appliances.

According to him, the AEDC decided to stretch its social corporate responsibility beyond providing and installing meters to communities and ensuring stable power supply by educating pupils on the bad side of electricity noting that knowledge of the danger therein would safeguard them against harmful use of electricity. “Electricity is very important to the society. It is used to cook, cool the temperature, light up the environment at night and for other purposes. Electricity impacts on the economy of a country and has direct relationship between consumption and national economy. “Electricity also has long term business investment in the future and we think we should invest in the future by relating with our (prospective) future customers.

“Beyond profi tability, safety in the use of electricity is important. We want it to be less dangerous, particularly for children and we think knowledge of the safety usage of electricity is important,” he said. Receiving the books, the Head Mistress, Mrs Th eresa Atudume, lauded the AEDC to choosing the school to the benefi ciary of the pilot scheme adding that it would go a long way to assist the pupils to knowledge. She said the gesture would not only boost the pupils’ knowledge of electricity but inscribe AEDC fi rmly in consciousness of the pupils. Th e pupils also jointly thanked the AEDC management for the kind gift.
