Electricity tariff hike: What is being done to address workers’ concerns – FG

The Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, Monday assured labour unions that the federal government is addressing their grievances regarding the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

Addressing State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the minister said the workers’ demands would be given due consideration.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, including the right to peaceful protest.

The minister highlighted government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the power grid, citing the construction of a 93-kilometre transmission line in the South-east and the acquisition of transformers and emergency resolution systems.

He said these initiatives were aimed at enhancing the overall resilience of the power infrastructure, which has been a long-standing concern for both the government and the public.

“Let me first make it abundantly clear that we are in democracy so there are fundamental human rights. I cannot deny people their rights. It is the right of labour to protest peacefully and to come up with their demands, from the perspective they saw what we did. It is clearly allowed, it is legitimate and it is understandable,” he said.
