May Day celebration in Ekiti state yesterday was devoid of the usual fanfare and pageantry, as a result of  the four months salaries  owed them by the state government and  the death  of the six doctors in an auto crash  on Kaduna road last Sunday.
The 2016 workers day celebration, which was held at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado Ekiti, was attended by a few number of the state work force, who was all dressed in white attire.
They offered prayers for the rejuvenation of the country’s nose-diving economy to enhance prompt payment of salaries and other benefits, the workers, also mourned the six doctors and members of the Nigerian Medical Association that perished in an auto crash along Kaduna road praying to God to grant  the families the fortitude to bear the monumental loss.

In an address presented by the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, asked Governor Fayose to review the state workers’ wage bill which currently stands at N2.6billion, saying the measure became imperative because the same figure was proclaimed by ex-governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration.
The speech, presented by NLC Chairman, Com. Ade  Adesanmi, on behalf of his counterpart in TUC, Comrade Odunayo Adesoye, called on Governor Fayose to pay the workers their gross salaries rather than net, adding that “this is the best way the plight of the workers can be alleviated in view of the encumbrances in the payment  of salaries due to economic downturn.”
