Edo varsity shuns ASUU, begins semester exams

Edo University, Iyamho (EUI), has shunned the strike called by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as the institution commenced its second semester examinations yesterday.

ASUU embarked on strike on August 14, over unpaid arrears and demands for improved infrastructure in the universities.

However, Deputy Vice Chancellor Edo University, Iyamho, Prof. Stephen M. Omodia, said the “University is focused and has a vision which is quite clear.”

He said: “We look at the global world and  not strike because EUI is ready to graduate students at the end of their course.

“The 2016/2017 academic calendar of the University has been planned and nothing can affect the changes because students cannot afford to spend extra days or weeks for a program that is stipulated for four to five years.

“And with the present management, the academic tempo would be sustained,” he said.

The DVC further stated that the institution was established to deliver world class university education to Nigerians in order to discourage foreign education.

He said: “If we must do that, it will have the share compassion under the able leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, that the academic system of the calendar should be stable and the import of that is to make us lay good foundation in terms of teaching  provide the functional basis of assessment.”

Omodia, therefore, advised parents whose children are seeking admission to use the opportunity of the 2017/2018 academic session currently on going at the University to bring their children to the school where quality education is guaranteed.
