The Edo State Governor and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the party would consider signing the Peace Accord if its members in police detention are granted bail and allowed to reunite with their families.
Obaseki disclosed this while addressing journalists after a closed-door meeting of the party caucus in Benin City, the Edo state capital.
The governor said: “we are hoping that when the Courts resume on September 17, 2024, all our people who have been detained in Abuja all these weeks will be released.
“If they are granted bail, allowed to come back home to their families and participate in the democratic process, we would consider signing the Peace Accord.”
Obaseki noted that the party was pleased with the commitment of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetoku and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to ensure a free, fair and credible election.
The peace accord is organised by the National Peace Committee (NPC), and seek to persuade parties in election, on the need to sign a document of exhibiting peaceful conduct, before, during and after electoral exercise.
The PDP had said 10 of its members were arrested by the police in Edo State and detained in Abuja, allegedly to weaken the PDP in its stronghold ahead of the governorship election billed for next Saturday.
The police has however denied the claim.
The alleged development prompted the State PDP chairman, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi decline sign the peace pact on September 12.
