Edo group threatens hunger strike over abandoned hospital project


A Benin-City based group, ‘Talakawa’s Parliament’ Thursday threatened to go on hunger strike over the abandoned five-star Central hospital in Benin City, Edo State.

The group also hinted of its plan to occupy the streets to draw government attention to the plight of citizens in dire need of health care.
The hospital was upgraded by a former governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and Commissioned by President Muhammadu on November 7, 2016.

The sum of N2.5billion was reportedly spent to procure medical equipment for the facility.
However, three years after the inauguration, the hospital has been under lock and key.
Speaker of the Parliament, Marxist Kola Edokpayi, said all entreaties to the governor Godwin Obaseki to accede to their request to disclose the true status of the multi-billion hospital has met bricks Wall.
According to Edokpayi, “we are going to embark on hunger strike in protest of the failure of the government to open the hospital.
“Since 2017, we have written several letters on this matter. Why should Edo people be denied good healthcare?
“Governor Obaseki was the Chairman of the State economic team when Oshiomhole was governor of the State. They cannot continue to deceive us.
“There is no way Governor Godwin Obaseki can distance himself from the 5 star Central hospital.”
