Edo: Court jails school proprietor for ‘insulting parent’

The presiding Magistrate of Oredo Chief Magistrate Court, Caroline Oghuma has handed out a six Months jail term to the proprietor of Calvary Crown Academy, Paul Okugbowa, for calling a mother of a pupil prostitute.

According to Court document, Okugbowa committed the offence on September 8, 2023 at the AIG Zone 5 headquarters in Benin, Edo state, where he conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.

He was said to have publicly called the plaintiff, Mrs Blessing Aigbudu, the mother of two pupils, a prostitute in the presence of her husband and bystanders.

The Court also convicted three teachers – Blessing Osarodion, Egharevba Esosa, and Isioma Nimen for negligence.

While Osarodion and Esosa were sentenced to one year imprisonment, Nimen was given six months sentencing for unlawfully abandoning another pupil, Zuri Aigbudu, 2.

The charge sheet indicated that the teachers failed to carry out their duty on a six year-old Salma Aigbudu which led to an injury on her face on September 29, 2021 and causing her a serious harm.

Salma Aigbudu was said to have been wounded in the waiting room of the school during the closing hour without any first aid administered on her by the teachers on duty.

The school proprietor, Osarodion and Esosa were however handed an option of N100,000 fine each, while Nimen was given N50,000 option.
