Edo Assembly suspends 5-month old member

The Edo State House of Assembly has suspended for three months its member, Mr. Godwin Adenomo, representing Ovia South West Constituency, for failure to prove his allegation of marginalization against the parliament. Adenomo, an All Progressives Congress (APC) legislator had written a petition to the House on Tuesday alleging that the House leadership has refused to pay him his salary and allowances amounting to N220 million.
In the petition was entitled: ‘Re-willful marginalization of Mr. Godwin Adenomo and signed by counsel to the legislator, Kingsley Obamogie and Co., Adenomo drew the attention of the House of the alleged injustice. Speaker Kabiru Adjotu had referred the petition to a fiveman Adhoc committee with a mandate to submit its report within 24 hours. In the report submitted during yesterday’s plenary, the committee recommended three-month sanction for the embattled lawmaker in the first instance for failure to appear before it to prove his claims in the petition.
Chairman of the committee, Victor Asein (APC), said Adenomo deliberately avoided the committee’s invitation, adding that his actions were political and a deliberate attempt to malign and bring the house to disrepute. The committee said emoluments of members are determined by the Revenue Allocation, Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission (RAMFAC). Speaker Adjoto afterwards directed the suspended lawmaker to submit all government property in his possession to the deputy clerk, administration of the Assembly. Adjoto also directed that clean copies of the resolution should be sent to the governor, state commissioner of police and the state director of DSS. It would be recalled that Adenomo took his legislative oath on December 18, 2017 following the Supreme Court Judgment of December 10, 2017 which sacked his predecessor, Mr. Sunday Aghedo.
