Edo Assembly passes governor, deputy pension rights bill, hides details

In a dramatic move, the Edo State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill for a law to provide for the 2023 Pension Rights of the Governor and  Deputy Governor.

Details of the bill was however not read out at plenary before its passed into law by the legislators.

The unprecedented move began when the assembly Clark read out the order of day saying: “1, a bill for a law to provide for the 2023 Pension Rights  of the Governor and the Deputy Governor”.

Speaker Marcus Onobun responded and sought for a voice vote in support or against the bill. The bill however scaled through following the yes support.

Other bills passed by the lawmakers during the last sitting of the seventh assembly also followed the same pattern.

The bills include emolument of elected political and public olfficers 2023, as well as Sanitation, Pollution, Waste Management, and a bill to establish the unified local government agency.

In 2016, the assembly stirred controversy following its amendment to the governor, deputy pension rights.

The amended 2016 pension law made provision for 200 million naira and 100 million naira homes for former governors and deputies respectively.

Other benefits to be enjoyed by the duo at the time were a pension for life at a rate equivalent to 100 percent of their last annual salary.
