Ebonyi impounds 2 trailer load of foreign rice

Ebonyi State government Tuesday impounded two trailer loads of foreign rice at Ebonyi beach.

The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Boarder Peace, Honorable Stanley Okoro Emegha said that members of Neighbourhood watch an internal security outfit of the state intercepted the trailers while smuggling foreign rice into the state on Tuesday night.

He said that one of the trailers was loaded with rice and empty cartons of beer just to deceive people.

Emegha who lamented that hoodlums on some occasions smuggle in arms in the name of importing foreign rice into the state said they do that through Afikpo River which connects Ebonyi to Cross River up to Cameron.

He equally disclosed that four person have been arrested and reminded for rice smuggling.

He said:  “You know we have a water link with cross river and that water continues till Cameroon and some of this smugglers use water way in carrying out this act.

“For this now the government of Ebonyi state banned importation and sell of foreign rice in the entire state because we have our own and it is far more nutritious than the foreign rice,” he said.
