Ebonyi: Corps members desert NYSC orientation camp

Batch A 2020 Corps members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have quit their orientation camp Wednesday morning in Ebonyi.

Their departure followed fresh directive handed to them by federal government due to deadly coronavirus, Blueprint correspondent reports.

When our correspondent contacted the state commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Charles Akpuenika, via phone, he confirmed that the corps members were addressed as early as 6am, and were asked to leave immediately.

Akpuenika said, “I got a call last night for the vacation of NYSC members currently in camp, but that the NYSC coordinator has addressed them. The vacation is because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Also, a top NYSC official who spoke on condition of anoymity said, “The  camp was closed by 6.00am today based on order came from the federal government.

“There are only doing somethings they should have done on the remaining days of camping but because of the urgent information, they are now doing it in a hurry.

“They are now doing things like collection of ID cards, posting letter and those who still have one or two books to sign, they are now signing them, after signing they will leave.

“All allowances accrued to the corps members are being paid today.”
