The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has cautioned residents of the FCT against purchasing vehicle number plates from unauthorized individuals.
In a press release, Wednesday, the directorate expressed concern over the increasing activities of touts and impersonators who are exploiting the current shortage of number plates to defraud unsuspecting vehicle owners.
The director of DRTS, Abdulateef Bello, said the scarcity of number plates is a result of irregular and insufficient supply from the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) plant. He assured the public that efforts are being made to resolve the situation and restore the normal issuance process.
“We understand the frustration this delay may cause, but we urge vehicle owners to remain patient. Measures are being taken to address the supply issues at the national level,” Bello stated.
The director added that the DRTS has not authorised any individual, staff member, or agent to sell number plates outside the agency’s official self-service portal.
He warned that any dealings outside this platform are illegal and potentially harmful.
For the sake of transparency and to prevent exploitation, the agency reminded the public that all approved prices for number plates and related services are published on its website and official communication channels. Residents are advised to cross- check any demand with the published rates before making payments.
