Driver arraigned for killing 6-year-old

The police in Ota, Ogun state, have arraigned a 45-year-old bus driver, Ramoni Salami, for allegedly knocking down a six-year-old boy.
The accused, whose address in unknown, is facing a two-count charge of manslaughter and reckless driving at an Ota Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecutor, Corporal Olumide Awoleke, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 20, 2014, about 2.30 p.m. at Elekuro Village on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
According to him, the accused drove a Ford bus marked KJA 232 XK recklessly and killed the six-year-old.
The offences, he noted, contravened Sections 5, 18 and 325 of the Federal Highway Act and the Road Traffic Law of Ogun, 2006.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Abimbola, granted him bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties must be property owners within the court’s jurisdiction.
In addition, Abimbola said the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment to the state government.
The case was adjourned to May 8 for mention.
