Driver, 64, docked for manslaughter

 

A 64-year-old man, Usman Akewushola, who allegedly drove recklessly to kill a pedestrian, appeared on Friday before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for manslaughter charge.

Akewushola, who resides at Abule Egba, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for reckless driving and manslaughter.

Police prosecutor, Raphael Donny, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 9, at Obadeyi Bus Stop, Ijaiye, Lagos.

Donny said the accused, who drove his Toyota Saloon car in a dangerous manner and hit two pedestrians, killed one of them, Joseph Nnabor, on the spot.
“The second victim, Mr. Dumondi Adekunbi, is still receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.

Donny said the accused was apprehended by passersby when he was about to escape.

The offences contravene Sections 18 and 20 of the Road Traffic Acts of Lagos State, 2012.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, A. Adedayo, granted the accused bail in the sum of one million naira with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until July 16 for mention.
