Don’t make mathematics looks scary to students, VC urges teachers

The University of Uyo (UniUyo) vice-chancellor, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, has admonished teachers in various institutions to simplify mathematics for the best interest of the students.

Ndaeyo gave the advice during the university’s 101st Inaugural Lecture on the topic: ‘The Art of Mathematics Education, Development, Research and Teaching: My Journey So Far’ delivered by Professor Amos Awodeyi at the permanent campus on Friday in Uyo.

He lamented that due to the rigorous steps most teachers take in teaching mathematics, many students lack interest and abandon the subject.

The VC commended the inaugural lecturer for casting away the fear that hitherto surrounded mathematics and making the world to know and believe that mathematics could be simplified.

“I must sincerely commended Professor Amos Folayan Awodeyi for making us know that indeed mathematics can be made very simple for easy understanding.

“I must thank him for that and I would recommend teachers and lecturers to also buy into the idea of the inaugural lecturer to make mathematics simple for students,” the VC said.

On his part, Prof. Awodeyi advocated that training and workshops should be mounted for practicing mathematics teachers on preparation of classroom documents to foster easy teaching and learning.

He charged the Akwa Ibom state government to invest in training at least 30 qualified mathematics teachers annually to address the dearth of sound mathematics teachers in schools within the state.
