Professor Eme Joseph, a measurement and evaluation expert at the University of Uyo has cautioned parents against imposing career choices on their children.
She therefore urged parents to prioritise understanding their children’s behavioural patterns to identify strengths and interests, adding that it will avoid them making a choice that may limit them.
Speaking during the 106th inaugural lecture of the university titled “Educational Evaluation from Cradle to Grey: The Quintessential Process for Development,” Joseph emphasised the importance of cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains in assessing pupils’ and students’ progress.
“Parents and caregivers should carefully observe young children’s behavioral patterns, noting these indicators of future strengths and abilities,” she advised.
Joseph urged educational institutions to utilise psychological tests to uncover pupils’ and students’ hidden abilities, particularly in the affective domain.
She also called for guidance counselors to be equipped with appropriate instruments to collect accurate information.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, praised the lecture as a masterpiece, highlighting evaluation’s critical role in exposing strengths and weaknesses.
He emphasised the importance of allowing children to make informed career choices based on their abilities.
