Don urges couple to seek counseling from experts to avoid post-marital imbalances

A Professor of rehabilitation and mental health counseling, Nasarawa state university Keffi, Prof. Levi Mayange, has called on married couples who experience post marital imbalance to go for rehabilitation for marriage sustainability.

Prof. Mayange who made the call at the 49th inaugural lecture titled,”Rehabilitation of post marital imbalances of married couples in Nigeria, mental health counseling approach” at the university assembly hall Wednesday.

Mayange who is the first professor of rehabilitation and mental health counseling in Nigeria, said counseling is a professional service in which a trained therapist or counselor helps individuals, couples,or groups address issues that affect their emotional, psychological and social well-being.

He highlighted the importance of mental health counseling in rehabilitation of post marital imbalances and improving couples relationship by providing tools to navigate challenges, improve communication and building of emotional resilience.

The different types of post marital imbalances according to the don included, emotional disconnection, financial conflicts, intimacy issues, communication breakdown amongst others.

He therefore encourage couples on continuous professional development for counselors, incorporate cultural sensitivity in counseling, public awareness and enhanced access to counseling services.

Earlier in her remark, the Vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Sa’adatu Liman,  who was represented by the Vice chancellor academy, Prof. Sallau  Modibo, lamented over the rampant cases of divorce in Nigeria especially in the North.
