The FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on teachers across the territory to disregard the claim of a Supreme Court judgment which gave victory to the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) to take control of secondary schools across the country.
Speaking to Blueprint during the conference at the Teachers House in Gwagwalada Tuesday, Chairman of FCT wing of the NUT, Comrade Stephen Knabayi and acting secretary, Comrade Margaret Jethro, said the Supreme Court judgment of January15, which he said ASUSS laid claim to was erroneous and misleading.
He said ASUSS made an illegal move to proceed to breach the provision of the Trade Union Act through an effort to get itself registered as a trade union, which he said the NUT approached a Federal High Court to file a suit seeking for an order stopping the registration of ASUSS as a trade union.
“And besides, ASUSS raised an issue of jurisdiction but the High Court said it has a jurisdiction to entertain the suit while ASUSS was not pleased with the pronouncement and went to the Court of Appeal, having gone through the judgement of the lower court,” he said.
According to him, the apex court’s judgement as delivered on 15 January, 2021 was very clear, which he said the NUT decided to urge its members and teachers across the FCT to discountenance the claim of ASUSS of taking charge of secondary schools across the country.
