Popular activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has confirmed that singer and social media personality, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, is currently in detention with the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja.
Adeyanju disclosed that Speed Darlington was arrested in Lagos last Friday and subsequently transferred to Abuja, where he has been held in custody since.
According to Adeyanju, the arrest was based on a formal complaint filed by Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy.
However, further information regarding the complaint were however, not disclosed.
The activist gave the update through a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, stating, “We just spent the last 30 minutes with Speed Darlington, and he narrated how he was arrested in Lagos Friday last week, moved around, and eventually brought to Abuja and has been in detention since then. Petition against him was written by Burna Boy, we can confirm.”
In response to the reports of Speed Darlington’s disappearance, Burna Boy took to X on Tuesday, writing, “Who’s missing?” While this cryptic post coincided with the news of Speed Darlington’s detention, it remains unclear if Burna Boy’s comment was directly related to the situation.
Though, as of press time, the police have not released any official statement on the development.
