Death on Mediterranean: We’ll release further details soon – FG

The federal government has assured that it would soon confirm and release accurate information on the Nigerians that reportedly died on the Mediterranean Sea en route Europe last week.
Reports emerged Monday that bodies of 26 women believed to be Nigerians were recovered by the Spanish ship last Friday.
Most of the women, reports say, were aged in large part between 14 and 18.
They drowned when the rubber boat carrying 64 sank on while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
However, in a statement yesterday, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tope Adeleye Elias-Fadile, said the Ministry was in touch with the Nigerian Mission in Rome, Italy, to ascertain the veracity of the report.
The spokesman said details of the incident would be given to the public as soon as the Mission confirms it and provides accurate details.
The statement read in part: “The federal government has been following the news in some sections of the media indicating that some Nigerians died on the Mediterranean Sea.
“Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been in constant touch with our Mission in Rome, to ascertain the veracity of this report. The ministry wishes to assure the general public that further details would be made know on this issue once confirmed and accurate information are received from the Mission.”
