A 30-year-old Fatima Mohammed has reportedly thrown her day-old baby girl into a suck away at Shagari Low Cost in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital.
Making a confessional statement while neighbours confronted her, Fatima, a house-help with one Buba Maina Saleh, said “I was feeling stomach pain and I asked for help from an elderly woman. I later rushed to a nearby suck-away and noticed that a baby was coming out of me and later fell into the suck-away.”
The sobering suspect, who could not entertain further questions, said it was not intentional that the baby fell into a suck-away.
Blueprint gathered that when the information reached neighbours, the attention of one Haruna Musa, a plumber, was drawn to help in breaking the suck-away, which he did and subsequently rescued the baby alive.
Sources said that Fatima and the baby have been taken to the Sani Abatcha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu with a directive that they be kept under the custody of the hospital till the commencement of police investigations.
