CVR: Low turnout for verifi cation

Display of voter register which began nationwide on Monday recorded low turnout of registered voters expected to verify their details in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Th e Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had recently announced that the register would be displayed from July 24 to July 28 for registered voters to check details of their data. It stated that the exercise was for persons registered in the fi rst quarter of ongoing ContinuousVoter Registration (CVR) which began on April 27.

Th e News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the centres in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in Karu, only a few persons were spotted checking the register as at 10.45 am. Th e INEC offi cials in charge of the assignment were on hand to assist the voters in checking their data supplied during registration. However, some of the registrants who spoke with the NAN commended INEC for the display of the register, saying that it had aff orded them the opportunity to view their details for correction. Mrs. Mary Uba said she was glad to see her details because her name was wrongly spelt.

“I am happy the register was displayed because I was able to note the wrong spelling of my name; my own Uba does not carry `h’ but they added `h’ to it.’’ Mr. Sunday Adebola said the idea of displaying the register was a welcome developmentas it would help to correct any mistake in the bio data of newlyregistered voters. Adebola also said the display would help to avoid waste of resources used in the production of permanent voter card that would become invalid due to incorrect information.

Head, Voter Education and Publicity, Gender and Civil Society Liaison of INEC in the FCT, Mrs. Ndidi Okafor, urged the registered voters to come out and check their biometric details. She explained that the exercise was necessary because it would ensure that fi nal information on each Permanent Voter Card (PVC) was correct. According to her, the display of the register will give the registrants the opportunity to check the authenticity of their captured details, including the spelling of names and ages. She advised the registered voters to take advantage of the exercise, especially with the limited time allotted for it
