The operation whirlwind of the Nigeria customs service ( NCS) has recorded breakthrough in its onslaught against smuggling activities and economic sabotage following the interception and seizures of over 900 jerrycans of smuggled petroleum otherwise known as PMS in Adamawa state.
The products were to be transported to Cameroon and other neighbouring countries through illegal routes.
Speaking at a press conference at the weekend in Yola, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian customs service Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, represented by the National coordinator operation whirlwind who is also Assistant Comptroller General incharge of finance and administration, ACG Husseini Ejubunu, said that the Nigeria customs service is resolute in its mission to dismantle smuggling and bring economic saboteaurs to justice.
He put the total number of the latest seized PMS to 916 jerrycans containing 25 litres each making it 22,900 litres intercepted in some flash points of Maiha, Mubi, Gurin and Belel in Adamawa state.
He said the products wiĺl be auction to the general public at the rate of N10,000 per jerrycan.
The CG attributed the success of the operations to deployment of technology, vigilance, professionalism and dedication demonstrated by officers and men of operation whirlwind and urged the public to report any suspicious activities to any nearest custom office.
Adeniyi further reiterated the commitments of the Nigeria customs service to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the benefits of government policies reach every Nigerian.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Area Comptroller Nigeria customs service Adamawa/Taraba command, Garba Bashir, said the service has reposition all it available machineries across all frontiers to tackle the menace of smuggling activities which he described as evil to the national economic and security which require genuine and collective efforts of all security agencies and patrotic Nigerians.
He appealed to the media to support this critical crusade against smuggling activities and economic sabotage by enlighten the public on the ills of smuggling activities with a call on all patrotic Nigerians and stakeholders to support security agencies by reporting suspicious movement and joined them in protecting the nation.
