CSO urges forensic audit of CBN under Sanusi

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria (CSON) has called on the National Assembly to initiate a forensic auditing on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the suspended governor, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

The organisation lead by its national president, Comrade Etuk Bassey Williams, while addressing a world press conference yesterday in Abuja, said its decision to call for auditing of the apex bank was predicated on the inconsistency of the formergovernor on the actual amount missing at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The group noted that the unstable position of Sanusi on the actual amount of money not remitted showed clearly that he had not explored the internal mechanism “which goes to confirm that he has ulterior motive and may be doing this to hide the rut at in the bank under his watch.”

Williams said: “The organisation will not in any way shower as undue praise on any individual or institution he or she represents without fulfilling all righteousness neither shall we destructively criticise same without proper findings. We wish to inform every constituent that this conference is not aimed at giving credit to any individual but to put the record straight, that you cannot work with any system and be an enemy of the system.

“Sanusi case as a CBN governor can be likened to a medical practitioner whose diagnosis are incorrect and lack professionalism. How would an acclaimed financial expert like Sanusi do a guess work on Nigeria’s oil sector finances? We wish to state that the certificate of Malam Sanusi is questionable and also suspicious because of his act of inconsistency on the missing fund. This is alarming and worrisome.”

He said the organisation would have stood by Sanusi if he had stayed by the $49 billion he first mentioned, adding that his inconsistency made it impossible for the organisation to stand by him.

“While we condemn any act of corruption in any government sector, we call on the security agencies to work to unravel the truth of the matter while CBN under Sanusi should be seriously probed as we suspect he has so many skeletons in his cupboards.”
