COVID-19: We’ve not recorded any case among corps members, staff ― NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has said that since the outbreak of the Corona virus in the country, it has not recorded any case among its corps members and staff.

The Corps also said, though the COVID-19 pandemic threatened socio-economic activities in the country, it has however remained visible through the efforts of corps members towards containing the disease.

Director-General of NYSC, Brig-General Shuaibu Ibrahim, stated this at the 2020 Batch ‘B’ Pre-orientation workshop Thursday.  The 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One orientation course was suspended abruptly on March 18, 2020, to avoid the spread of COVID-19 in the orientation camps nationwide.

General Ibrahim further revealed that the scheme had put measures in place to ensure that no case of the virus would be recorded when camps reopen on November 10, 2020.

“Since the outbreak of the virus in the country, we have not recorded any case among our corps members and staff.

“Though the pandemic posed challenges to the socio-economic activities in the country and the rest of the world, the NYSC, being a dynamic organisation, remained visible, especially through the complementary contributions of corps members at containing the pandemic.

“The management, therefore, is committed to ensuring that no camp records outbreak of the pandemic,” he said.

Ibrahim also said that the NYSC would refocus its approach to the conduct of the forthcoming orientation course to align with the current realities.

So, he urged state governors to discharge their statutory duties of upgrading and expanding camp facilities to adequately serve the increasing corps population.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that an environment that is conducive is crucial to the success of the Orientation programme, and indeed the entire Service Year.

“Management considers as highly commendable, the improvements in camp development in some states.”
