The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Edo state, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has expressed concern over the growing reports of “avoidable exposure of healthcare workers to coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state due to lack of protective gears”.
Ize-Iyamu said the development threatens the “success of our containment plans. Without protecting our health workers, we will not be able to stop COVID-19.”
In a statement issued by Ize-Iyamu campaign organisation in Benin city, Edo state capital, the aspirant expressed concerns that disturbing infection of doctors have been reported in at least two health institutions in the state.
According to him, “it is the duty of the state to ensure that the sacrifice and service of health workers who are on the frontline of duty is not rewarded with avoidable danger to their health.”
He also paid tribute to healthcare workers whom he described as first responders across the nation for their selfless sacrifice and bravery in the fight against the novel coronavirus disease.
The aspirant further said, “While we embrace the warmth and safety of our homes, healthcare workers strive daily on the frontline to care for the sick, gain a more robust understanding of COVID-19, and offer us recommendations on how to remain safe and in good health.
“This is nothing short of heroic and no words will be sufficient to convey our gratitude.
“As a mark of appreciation and to ease the pressure on our heroes, we hope that everyone heeds the recommendations to remain indoors, maintain social distancing, and practice good personal hygiene.”
